Shifting from Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed.

Conservative reactions to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the censorship procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's name and likeness are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater openness.

“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release

However, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The release—from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.

But some do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled some conservative figures to launch the attack.

“This is pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement

Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“The release is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.

Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued

However, broader discourse on the right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative approval to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.

The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that included no new data.
