New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
