RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
